Just like their European counterparts the pubescent Zambian Kunda girls also have a scary wild animal in the psyche of folklore.

A wild animal attacking and eating a girl in the forest is an ancient theme of the Zambian matrilineal Kunda girl’s coming-of-age ceremonies and rituals. Instead of a wolf as in Little Red Riding Hood, the Kunda women have a leopard – an ancient symbol also portrayed in the rock art.
